We believe that alternative fee arrangements can provide a better working environment for attorneys and clients. Rather than concentrating on billing for every small task, a team approach can be taken to ensure we are all working toward common goals and objectives. We have found that a typical effective alternative fee structure is to identify those goals and objectives and targeted amount of time to dedicate to be available (which is typically discounted off of an hourly rate) – much like we were being hired to be a part-time staff member and available a set number of hours or to accomplish a specific objective. This provides a monthly flat fee for the client and a dedicated team available to assist within a specific project scope.
The best approach to alternative fees is to define the scope of work needed, much like a job description, agree upon benchmarks of success and determine a monthly fee for providing those services. Alternative fees can then be revisited from time to time and adjusted with an increase or decrease in services needed.
